“A Need For Speed”

Get ready to relive the Hot Rod glory days through this epic tribute to Boyd Coddington, as we write the last chapter of the only race car ever built at the American Hot Rod shop by the legend himself!

Join Duane Mayer, former shop manager of the famous Hot Rods by Boyd shop, and Ian Jones, Co-Executive producer of the original American Hot Rod television series, as they reunite to recognize the iconic pioneer whose innovative designs transformed the collector car world. The man whose timeless designs, paired with daily driver reliability and raw horsepower, forever changed the classic car industry:

Boyd Coddington

It’s been nearly 20 years since Boyd's passion for building hot rods drove him to invite America into his shop to see what it takes to build these amazing works of art. His unique designs quickly made him a household name after he brought his magic to the small screen with the hit Discovery television series, “American Hot Rod”. Millions of viewers worldwide got to witness the incredible cars that Boyd and his team brought to life. No trailer queens here though! What set Boyd's hot rods apart from the crowd was that he built them to be driven, not just to be shown off at car shows. Each unique build was a challenge to himself and his incredible team, and he loved to push his cars to the limit and show viewers what they were truly capable of.

Boyd found a way to really drive this point home when, in 2007, he began building the one and only race car ever to be produced at the Boyd Coddington Hot Rod Shop. Boyd intended for THIS machine to be truly special, an early american automobile modernized into a high performance race car that was purpose-built to break the speed record at Bonneville Speed Week in the Hot Rod Roadster Class. This is the ultimate race where the only way builders can back up their talk is to design and build the fastest hot rod on the salt flats. Boyd knew this was the achievement he needed to prove once and for all that he was the undisputed Hot Rod building master.

Boyd finished building his ultimate masterpiece, a fully customized 1932 Ford Model T, known as The Bonneville Racer, just in time for the 2007 Speed Week time trials, with the entire team confident it would break the speed record of 199.4mph. With his wife, Jo, behind the wheel of the hot rod roadster, they attempted to qualify for the race… but it just wasn’t his time yet. Unable to qualify for the necessary license certifications, Jo never got the chance to test the Bonneville Racer’s limits and fulfill Boyds dream.

Boyd didn’t give up after that set-back though, knowing he could regroup and try again the following year. Sadly, Boyd became ill and eventually passed away in 2008, never seeing his Bonneville Speed Record dream become a reality.

Boyd's dream lives on though, and has continued burning in the heart of original American Hot Rod shop chief mechanic and close friend Duane Mayer, who has been determined all these years to fulfill Boyd's dream of breaking the Hot Rod Speed record at Bonneville with The Bonneville Racer.

The car is in high demand understandably, with prices at auction beyond the reach of Duane's wallet. For ten years, Duane has been chasing this elusive car around the United States as it was bought and sold just outside his budget. Finally, Duane received a phone call from a friend who was also an old customer of Boyd's, offering him an undisclosed reasonable offer that Duane couldn’t refuse, with the mutual understanding that Duane would take the Bonneville Racer back onto the salt flats and break the hot rod speed record as a tribute to Boyd.

With the car in his garage, Duane and his team will begin the journey of making Boyd's dream a reality. But it's not as easy as it seems. Now that Duane has had a chance to fully inspect the racer, it’s become immediately apparent that no one has been properly caring for it throughout the years. To have a shot at making history, this car is going to have to be completely rebuilt from the ground up.

With Bonneville Speed Week just around the corner, Duane and his crew must hurry to rebuild this icon so that it not only drives and passes all safety regulations, but speeds across the flats fast enough to break the current speed record:

249.3 mph.

This 1-hour, 3-part series will be packed with intense drama, comedic surprises, unexpected mayhem, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat action as Duane and his team work tirelessly to make Boyd's dream come to life. Follow them as they overcome one obstacle after another to build a car that can break the speed record and honor Boyd's legacy.
